The Royal Burgh of Sanquhar is a small market town on the river Nith and is surrounded by the most striking scenery and offers plenty of walks in the countryside. The ruins of the medieval castle on the southern approach have a very colourful history.

Captured by both the English and Scots during the Wars of Independence the castle has been visited by William Wallace, Robert Bruce,Edward1 of England and Edward 11 while centuries later Sanquhar was visited by Mary Queen of Scots and her son James VI.
